“Jesus,” Dan mumbled.
From this point on, the script was mostly unreadable. But, from small phrases and words here and there, he gathered that the preacher and his brother had actually joined and cocooned themselves in the chapel. They were the strange stalker he and Eric had fought. He already knew that, but reading the journal had humanized it a bit, which made it all the worse. The two men had melded in their cocoon, becoming one single horrifying creature with one mind and one very fucked up body.
What a sickening thought.
“You shouldn’t read that shit,” Toni said.
Dan looked over and saw that her eyes were open. He wondered how long she had been awake.
“It’s fucked up,” Dan said. “Those two men… they joined together and became that one creature. It’s almost stranger than Robert’s journal.”
“The world is all messed up nowadays,” she said. “I bet there are stranger things out there. What we should be focusing on is just surviving. Once we figure that out, then we can do some investigating.”
Dan smiled. She was right. As the leader, it was his job to make sure everyone stayed safe and sound. That had been pretty difficult lately, but somehow he had managed to do it. But he realized he couldn’t have done it alone. Everyone, Toni included, had a part to play in that success. Especially Toni, he realized. She was a tough one; not to mention level-headed and caring.
They would likely not have survived without her.
“I appreciate every piece of advice you have,” he told her. “Don’t ever hesitate to call me out if you think I’m screwing up.”
Toni grinned. “Oh, you don’t have to worry about that,” she said. “When you screw up, I’ll be the first to let you know.”
“Will you guys shut the fuck up?” Drew said.
Dan and Toni laughed quietly. Toni rolled over and bunched herself up in her sleeping bag. Dan set the notebook down and did the same. It would be difficult to sleep, he knew, but he had to try. There would be a lot of stress getting everything figured out. Thankfully, everyone else was on the ball.
Jake and Max would get the power grid working again. Lena and Travis would make sure everyone was healthy. Cliff, Toby, and Drew would help out with the muscle work. Finally, Toni would provide some sanity in Dan’s leadership. He should be content, he realized, but some part of him still wondered if he could do the job. Only time would tell.
